Nashville Bar Association Membership Information

 

 
Membership in the NBA is open to any attorney admitted to practice in the highest jurisdiction of the state in which he or she is licensed. We also have associate member status for law school students, paralegals and legal assistants. Membership dues for attorneys are $200 a year, a sliding fee schedule based on income is also available.  Membership dues for paralegals are $75 and for law students, $40.  Below are descriptions of the events, services and programs sponsored of the NBA. NBA Attorney Directory

The essential guide to Davidson County attorneys. This useful directory is published annually and contains photos and addresses of Davidson County lawyers, firm lists, listings of attorneys by practice area, court information and general NBA information. To purchase a directory, call the NBA office at 242-9272.

Committee Support

NBA committees evaluate important bar or court-related issues. Staff is available to schedule and publicize committee meetings, to circulate material, and to docket agenda items for Board consideration.

International Relations

Visit one of our sister cities in Caen, Normandy, France or Magdeburg, Germany or host an attorney from one of these cities in your home. Participants may receive CLE credit and an unforgettable experience.

Legislative and Governmental Relations

Staff and volunteer lobbyists represent positions of the NBA, as approved by the Board, before General Assembly, Metro Council, and Congress, as well as administrative and executive agencies. Efforts includes committee testimony, individual meetings, letter writing, drafting and negotiating.

Library

Complete collection of federal materials, national reporter system and Tennessee materials located at Nashville School of Law on Sidco Drive. This facility is open for research by practitioners during regular School of Law hours. For more information, call the Nashville School of Law at 256-3691.

Nashville Bar Journal

Essential information is provided in our monthly magazine with features, views from the bench, legal developments, history, sports, CLE schedule, and other articles of interest to lawyers. NBA members are invited to contribute articles and may place free classified advertisements.

Placement Service

Our full-service Placement office screens applicants, supplies resumes, arranges interviews and handles advertising for all office positions. We offer the lowest cost service in Nashville. Members receive additional discounts with still more savings for prompt payment. Call the NBA for help with your temporary and permanent placement needs.

Printing Service

We offer an outside printing service that is substantially below retail cost.  Prints can be in black and white or full color, maximum 1,000 prints.

Proxima Ultra Light Projector 

Our Proxima projector is available to rent and NBA members get a special discount. It's great for all your PowerPoint presentations. Commercial equipment at less than commercial prices!

Video Transcription

Equipment provided for those who need to do video transcription. In some cases, a temporary employee is available to do transcription work.

 

Annual Banquet

A memorable occasion. The most prestigious awards of the NBA are presented to recognize outstanding accomplishments and years of service. This banquet is a great time to visit with old friends and make some new acquaintances. This regal affair occurs in early December and is a wonderful precursor to the holidays.

Board Retreat

The relaxed environment provides the focus required for intensive study of the upcoming year.

Golf Tournament

A summer highlight, this social event is the talk of the town! It's a great afternoon for fun and camaraderie with your golf buddies. An added benefit is that this charity event raises money for the NBA Pro Bono Program.

Law Week Luncheon

Held during the first week of May to commemorate Law Week, this luncheon is not to be missed! Inspiring speakers, great food and a time to reflect upon the meaning of the profession. Come out and celebrate your freedom!

Legislative Reception

Reception hosted by the Legislative and Governmental Relations Committee and NBA Board for members of Davidson County legislative delegation.

Memorial Service

A poignant service, traditionally held downtown each fall, memorializes NBA members deceased during the past year. Family and friends appreciate this gesture of respect. Wonderful resolutions provided by members of the bar are entered upon the Courts of Record for posterity.

Picnic

FREE for all NBA members. Old-fashioned barbecue and beverages, live music and fantastic freebies. Held at Riverfront Park, it's easy to attend and gets better every year!

Swearing-In Ceremony 

Held in the fall following announcement of successful candidates of the bar exam. New attorneys are invited to be sworn in before the local courts; the ceremony is led by the presiding judge and NBA president.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Dial-A-Lawyer

A free call-in program conducted at NBA offices which furnishes general legal information to the public. Held on the first Tuesdays of each month, from 6 - 8 pm. We rely heavily on volunteer attorneys to handle the volume of calls for this program. Dinner is provided, and a spirit of camaraderie unites the participants. Pro Bono Credit applies.

Speakers Bureau

Volunteers visit with community and business groups for speaking engagements on various legal topics.

Charitable Wills Project
The NBA Young Lawyers Division also conducts a Charitable Wills Project each summer. This program gives members of the public the opportunity to have a simple will (estates no larger than $400,000) prepared by a licensed attorney at the affordable cost of $99, all of which is donated to a charitable organization.

 
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Continuing Legal Education

The NBA offers award-winning continuing legal education programs in a full range of practice fields. Attorneys can choose from among numerous CLE programs each month. Programs are offered in a variety of formats and time frames from one hour to full day courses. Live programming is available as well as ALI-ABA courses presented through tape delay video format. You can find course descriptions and registration forms each month in the Nashville Bar Journal and on this website.

 

Minority Opportunities Program

A complete initiative aimed at increasing opportunities for minority attorneys in Nashville. Projects include: Job fairs for 1L and 2L students for placement in Nashville law firms and government agencies; and the Minority Summer Internship which places high school juniors and seniors in local firms.

 

SUBSIDIARIES & AFFILIATES

NBA Lawyer Referral & Information Service

Provides over 5,000 fee generating referrals annually to lawyers enrolled.

 

Nashville Pro Bono Program

Nashville Bar Foundation (NBF)

The mission of the Nashville Bar Foundation is to promote and preserve the honor and integrity of the legal profession, to improve the administration of justice, to enhance legal education, to provide financial support to law students through loans and scholarships, and to foster the continuing education of lawyers and the judiciary.

 

NBF Fellows Program

The Foundation Fellows Program honors distinguished practitioners, raises funds for community service and minority opportunity activities, and holds a formal dinner in November to recognize new Fellows.

 

Nashville Conflict Resolution Center

NCRC seeks to improve the lives of Nashville residents, particularly those in under-served communities or otherwise disadvantaged in the judicial system, by providing them with a broad range of no- or low-cost mediation services and teaching them effective, non-violent conflict resolution skills.  NCRC currently operates in the General Sessions Civil Court Room II.

 

Young Lawyers Division

The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the NBA takes an active role in Bar programs and in other community activities. Some of their projects include:

  • Programs for the elderly, the homeless, youth, and other groups with special needs. Honored in 1999, by Lexis for their outstanding work with the Tornado Hotline.

  • Special interest programs for Quality of Life, Professionalism and Mommy Lawyers.

  • Continuing legal education seminars.

  • Carbolic Smoke Ball, a black-tie fundraiser for charity.

  • Social activities, such as concerts, social hours, and excursions to Nashville Sounds games.

  • OYEZ, a quarterly newsletter, keeps YLD members informed of current and future events.

Members of the YLD must be under 36 years of age or must have been in the practice of law for ten years or less. To join, an eligible lawyer must first join the NBA and then pay additional annual dues of $20.
